Coffee 101

On Wednesday, January 30, coffee expert Matthew Davis will share his expertise on one of the most consumed beverages in the world, coffee. We asked Matthew a few questions about his own coffee drinking habits and some of the interesting things he's learned about the beverage from his many years in the industry.
How do you drink your coffee, Matthew?
Black. I enjoy most drip coffees and love a good pour over coffee.
Do you remember your first cup of joe?
I was a very late bloomer when it came to coffee. I didn't have my first coffee until I was well into my 20s. I try not to tell anyone, but my first coffee was a Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks. So delicious!
How long have you been a coffee aficionado?
I have been working in the coffee industry for over 10 years now. I really dove deep into the industry five years ago by focusing on developing my palate and training to compete in Mid-Atlantic regional coffee competitions. I have had the opportunity to work with cafés, coffee roasters, I've run cafés, and even lived in a coffee growing region for a few years. I've been blessed with the opportunity to have been involved in almost every aspect of the coffee industry.
What is your favorite variety/flavor and how do you take your coffee?
I love a delicious Ethiopian naturally processed coffee brewed on a Chemex!
What is the most amazing fact you’ve learned about coffee?
I'm continually blown away by the fact that coffee is the seed of a fruit of an evergreen tree!
Who were the first cultivators of coffee beans and therefore the first drinkers of coffee?
This is the first section of my Coffee 101 event. Rural hunter/gatherer tribes in Ethiopia and Sudan would pick the cherries from the coffee plant, mix it with animal fats and local spices to create what could essentially be described as the original energy bar. They used coffee cherries for energy before the drink was ever "discovered."
