The AARP Foundation
The AARP Foundation offers federal income tax help at Skokie Public Library. This service is free of charge to low-income senior citizens and people with disabilities. Call the Village of Skokie Human Services Division at 847-933-8252 to find out if you are eligible and/or to schedule an appointment.
AARP Tax-Aide Site Locations
For other local locations, enter your zip code and distance from your home to find a nearby site. Tax-Aide services includes federal and Illinois programs.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)
The TCE program offers free tax help, particularly for those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including senior citizens, people with disabilities, those who need English language assistance, and people who make less than $60,000 annually.
Illinois Department of Human Services
The Center for Economic Progress (CEP) and Ladder Up provide free income tax preparation and electronic filing for families with annual incomes up to $58,000 and individuals with annual incomes up to $32,000.

Interactive Tax Assistant (ITA) is a tool that provides answers to a number of tax law questions.
Illinois Tax Services for Individuals
File an Illinois state return for free, pay estimated tax payments, etc.
For tax year 2023 you will use Form 1040 or Form 1040 SR for seniors. You may have to fill out Schedule 1, Schedule 2, and/or Schedule 3 if you received unemployment compensation, you are self-employed, or have an education or foreign tax credit.
