Local Author Showcase: Debbie Sue Goodman
April 4, 2014
We’re lucky to have many writers living and working in and around Skokie, and Local Author Showcase aims the spotlight at them and their work. First up: Debbie Sue Goodman, a writer, stand-up comedian, singer, and advice columnist who’s penned both fiction and nonfiction.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’ve lived in the Skokie/Evanston area most of my life. I feel most at home in Skokie. I enjoy going to dinner and movies in Old Orchard.
What are the titles of your books? How would you describe them?
The title of my books are Still Single, Still Dating, and My Husband the Stranger. I would describe my first book [Still Single] as a combination of funny dating stories, stories about my life and my family, and poems that I wrote through the years. My second book is humorous and includes stories about my life as a single female and my widowed mom’s dating experiences. My Husband the Stranger is a drama that is based on a true story about my best friend’s divorce.
What’s your typical writing routine?
I usually write notes throughout the day when something inspires me and I think of a funny story or joke to add to my comedy show or for a future book.
Who’s your favorite writer?
My favorite author is Danielle Steel.
When did you start writing? What inspired you to begin?
I stared writing when I was nine years old. I wrote poems to my mom and my family. I kept a diary of everything that happened in my life and I still do. A teacher that I had in junior high once told me that I wrote terrific stories and poetry. He told me that I would be a writer when I grew up. He was a wonderful teacher and he was right!
