The Year in Tech

What a year in technology it has been for the library! Here are some of the highlights:

The New Youth Computer Lab Opened

As a part of The Lab’s remodel a new soundbooth and green screen lighting system were added to help children make cool movies and record their next hit single (or whatever they call it now). We are currently offering some awesome tech in the space, such as new Afinia H800 3D printer, a few 3Doodlers, a Lego Wedo set, and a Cameo Silhouette vinyl cutter. Items of technical interest will continue to rotate in and out of The Lab in the near future, so look our for a Raspberry Pi 2 and even some Arduinos! Of course, Minecraft is always available on our own server.

We Went All-In On Intensive Multi-Part Technology Classes

From a two-part iPad for Beginners class to an advanced four-part introduction to the JavaScript web development language, we believe that multi-part classes are a means of diving deeper in hard to master subjects. For the more advanced iterations of these classes, we utilized flipped classroom approach in which the learner listens to lessons at home and comes to class ready to work together with mentors and peers. We plan on offering many more of these types of learning opportunities in 2016. Find out more about our Tech Classes.

Google Chromebooks Became Available at the Information Desk

The Niles Township high schools have been providing incoming freshmen with Chromebooks for a few years, and now it is time for the rest of Skokie to give them a whirl. A Chromebook is designed to get you online--and almost nothing else--which is pretty much all most of us need from a laptop nowadays anyway! These simple, cool laptop computers are now available to be checked out for one week, with the option of renewing up to 3 times. Browse all of the devices and gadgets you can check out with your Skokie library card.

We have some amazing stuff lined up for early next year. Keep your eye on this blog for a heads-up!
