What's New with SkokieWiki
February 10, 2016
SkokieWiki, Skokie’s online community portal has been up and running since September 2015. Now we have over 170 new pages! Some pages were created during the two workshops we've held at the library (Introducing SkokieWiki and Wiki’s 101). Other entries, like the World Wiffle Ball Championship, have been the result of going out into the community and spreading the word.
I’ve learned some really fascinating things about Skokie through connecting with community members and reading the wiki posts. For example, we have an awesome urban farm here, and the 2015 “Go” Teacher of the Year lives in the village! There are also some really practical things posted to the wiki--we’ve had a mostly mild winter so far, but you never know when you may need to remind yourself how Alternate Side Parking works. It was also very fulfilling for me as a reference librarian, when I was able to refer to the SkokieWiki to assist a patron who was looking for information on the ESL classes offered in part by Oakton Community College.
As the wiki continues to grow I look forward to it being a destination where residents go to contribute and find information about what is happening in their community. A key component are the continuing community contributions. I am always on the lookout for new things to include, but I’m hoping that community members feel inspired to make it their own. I’m curious to hear more about what Skokians are into, whether it is favorite restaurants, hobbies, or community organizations. What are you an expert in? Make a page!
SkokieWiki is really easy to dive right into, but if you need an extra hand getting involved or would just like more information, I’m here help out. I can always be reached at *EMAIL*. Additionally, we sometimes offer wiki related events and programs here at the library. There is a Business Before Hours event coming up on February 17. I will also host drop-ins in the west lobby outside the Community Engagement office on February 1, 15, and 29 from 1:30-3pm. I welcome everyone to stop by to learn more about SkokieWiki, or just say hello.
