Local Author Showcase: Christy Ogilvie
August 8, 2014
Local Author Showcase spotlights Skokie-area writers and their work. This month, meet Christy Ogilvie, a Skokie resident and author of the historical drama That Kind of Girl.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a Chicago-area singer and music teacher. We moved to Skokie last May. I grew up in Glenview and love being back here, close to the city.
How would you describe your book?
I would describe That Kind of Girl as a story of beauty and triumph in the face of horrifying circumstances. It’s a tale told with lyricism and character.
What books do you love reading?
I read a lot of literacy fiction, and that’s what I want to create. I’m also a fan of psychology and progressive spiritual thought. There’s a book by a popular psychologist about adolescent brain development and a book by Gary Wills, professor emeritus from Northwestern University, on my nightstand. And O magazine!
What’s the last book that made you laugh? The last one that made you cry?
The last book that made me laugh ’til I cried was Bossy Pants by Tina Fey. She’s brilliant and funny as hell. The last story to make me cry was an oldie, A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle.
What’s the most surprising thing on your bookshelf?
Small bowls of amethyst and chakra stones. I love the energy around certain stones.
Where do you like to read?
I love to read things on trains and planes. And on vacation, I take one book for every two days we’ll be gone. I love a good story! At home, there’s a big chair I can sprawl into with my two Siamese cats.
