Crochet Cute

By Lynnanne Pearson

I've been crocheting since I was in college. I don't make blankets or hats, but I do make amigurumi (cute little toys). No complicated stitches are required. In fact, most are made using the beginning single crochet stitch. Here are some of my favorite pattern books to get you started making your own adorable creations.

  • Tiny Yarn Animals: Amigurumi Friends to Make and Enjoy

    2008 by Snow, Tamie

I made the owl, hippo, and lemur from this book. All of them turned out super cute. If owls (or hippos and lemurs) aren't your thing, there are patterns for koalas, pigs, lambs, and hedgehogs. The patterns and instructions are great for beginners as well as those who have been crocheting for a while.

  • Literary Yarns: Crochet Patterns Inspired by Classic Books

    2017 by Wang, Cindy

As a librarian and a crocheter, this book is right up my alley. You can make literary characters like the White Rabbit or Sherlock Holmes. Or you can crochet an author: I used this book to crochet a Jane Austen for a friend's birthday a couple of years ago.

  • Ami Ami Dogs: Seriously Cute Crochet!

    2011 by Hoshi, Mitsuki

You can crochet your own basket full of puppies! Don't want to make a stuffed creature? The author provides patterns to crochet your own dog magnet or key chain. I have made several dogs from this book and the sequel Ami Ami Dogs 2 and love the results. This one is for more experienced crocheters, as you need to know how to read a crochet chart.

  • Amigurumi Treasures: 15 Crochet Projects to Cherish

    2019 by Lee, Erinna

Even cuter than crocheting animals is crocheting animals wearing adorable outfits. Using this book, I made Daisy-Mae the pig for a Christmas present for my sister in 2019. Daisy-Mae looked adorable with her hair bow and a tutu!

  • Mini Amigurumi Animals: 26 Tiny Creatures to Crochet

    2021 by Abbondio, Sarah

From the jungle to the forest to the farm to your home, Sarah Abbondio's latest crochet book has all your cute crochet animal needs covered. A word of warning: the book uses British crochet terms, so you will want to translate to American terms before picking up your hook. I love this book so much. So far I have made a moose, a giraffe, and a cow.

  • Crochet Animal Rugs

    2018 by Rott, Ira

Ira Rott went viral with her adorable elephant pillow pattern (included in this book). While the elephant pillow is a bit more complicated (as someone who made the elephant pillow, I can attest to that), beginners should have no trouble making any of the simpler pillows, like the Panda or Kitty. More experienced crocheters can challenge themselves with the charming giraffe security blanket or lacy-eared elephant rugs. Dinosaurs, monkeys, and crabs round out the menagerie of critters one can make. Even crocheters without children will be grabbing their hooks in order to create one of these cute designs.
